I'm on a bit of a bee-mimic kick lately, which I seem to get into every few months. Here's another backyard find - this sharp looking fellow is an American Morio Bee Fly (or as I accidentally typo'ed on an insect forum, "beer fly", which I assume is related to a bar fly?) Hemipenthes morioides.
On Sunday I shared a post with two photos of a White-bowed Smoothwing, a large hoverfly. I'm including that again today (second photo) for comparison. Now look at the first photo - isn't it the same species?
Wetlands are an ideal topic for Nature's Archive #podcast. Many people think of them as unproductive land that breed mosquitos, but that couldn't be further from the truth. White-bowed Smoothwing, Scaeva affinis, is a large hoverfly (aka syrphid fly, aka flower fly) found in the western USA. There is a different species that looks very similar and has the same common name, but is found in Europe.
We're now in the heart of Mariposa Lily season in California! Here's a Butterfly Mariposa Lily, Calochortus venustus, seen recently at Pinnacles National Park.
Happy Mother's Day! I hope that everyone is taking a moment today to honor the mothers in their lives. Even if they don't fly miles a day catching insects on the wing just to regurgitate them into your mouth, I'm sure they still deeply care!
